Argentina's Supreme Court Dismisses Producer Marcelo Corazza's Appeal

The Supreme Court of Justice dismissed a motion filed by the defense of television producer and former 'Big Brother' winner Marcelo Corazza. He is accused of being part of a gang dedicated to the sexual exploitation of minors. Additionally, the highest court upheld a judicial resolution that had expanded his prosecution and ordered his detention. The decision was made by judges Horacio Rosatti, Carlos Rosenkrantz, and Ricardo Lorenzetti, who declared the extraordinary complaint appeal filed by the defendant's defense inadmissible. The motion challenged the ruling of the National Chamber of Criminal and Correctional Matters, which had expanded his prosecution, modified the legal qualification against him, and ordered his detention. Corazza's defense had alleged 'arbitrariness' in the ruling and insisted that the accused was not involved in the investigated facts, but the appeal had previously been rejected by the National Chamber of Criminal Cassations, according to the Argentine News Agency. Corazza then turned to the Supreme Court with an extraordinary complaint appeal, which was finally dismissed by the highest court under Article 280 of the National Civil and Commercial Procedural Code. Currently, the Federal Oral Court 3 of the City of Buenos Aires is conducting the oral trial against Corazza and four other accused individuals for illicit association and human trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation. According to the accusation by prosecutors Carlos Rívola and Alejandra Mángano, the organization recruited underage male teenagers with the aim of forcing them into sexual practices, abusing them, and sexually exploiting them. The investigation points to events that occurred in the City of Buenos Aires, the province of Buenos Aires, and Misiones between 1999 and March 2023. The case began on October 24, 2022, following a complaint filed with PROTEX, the specialized prosecutor's office for human trafficking. The file identified Francisco Rolando Angelotti as the alleged leader of the gang, while Corazza, Ignacio Mermet, Fernando Charpenet, and Leandro Aguiar were accused as members of the organization. Corazza was first arrested on March 20, 2023, released in April due to the type of criminal charge, and arrested again on May 31 of the same year following a decision by the Appeals Court. Subsequently, he was transferred to the Ezeiza penitentiary, where he remained detained until November 2023, when the case was already being processed in the federal jurisdiction. The oral trial is taking place before the Federal Oral Court 3, composed of judges Andrés Basso, Javier Ríos, and Fernando Machado Peloni.
